Expats and locals living in Guangzhou, what’re your favorite and least favorite parts of the city? I’ll be arriving there in a little under 3 months time for a long term stay. Anything I should be well prepared for or aware of in the mean time? Thanks!

islandtravel 2 points · 18 hours ago I’ve been in GZ since last September and have had a pretty good time. It honestly depends on your hobbies and what kind of budget you have. There are wechat groups for everything. Make sure you have a reliable VPN BEFORE coming to China as it will be difficult to get it once you get here. I’ve enjoyed hiking and learning photography and some coding. Traveled around a lot within China and do board games and stuff on the weekends or join groups of locals and expats that get together on weeknights to workout. So yeah lots of things to do. Can’t say I have a fav part of the city although I do spend a lot of time in ZNT area.

michaelsan89 1 point · 17 hours ago Gz can be pretty cool man! There are so many hidden gems you could die for. My fav places are Zhujiang New Town and Tiyu xi Road that are essentially the city center. However there are also other old style places with some european style buildings.
dandmcd United States 1 point · 4 hours ago Favorite: The food and coffee, especially foreign food. I’m not a fan of Cantonese food ,but the city is loaded with great international food (not nearly as much as Shanghai), like La Medina, Pizza Factory, and La crêperie chez Maggy, and there is excellent Chinese and Asian food to be found around every corner. Other benefit of GZ is it is close to other major cities like Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, so you can always get out and explore. There’s not a whole lot to do in GZ except eat and go to Changlong amusement park, so you’ll want to take the train to more interesting places soon after exploring what little GZ has to offer. Least favorite is the trash. Once you get out of the larger business districts, the city is real dirty, with puddles of dish water attracting mosquitoes, trash everywhere, and odd smells. Also, it is a very noisy city, and people have no respect for others, so don’t be surprised to be riding on the subway next to some dude watching a movie with the sound on full blast, with no headphones.
